Hate and social polarity

26 Jul

I see it all the time.  It’s there, just waiting, like a bad memory, to reappear.  I can’t help but wonder, who owns it and how is it fed?  Where does it sleep?

You are wondering what I’m going on about?  So do I!

It’s the hate.  It appears in the comment sections of news articles about anything, but it is always there.  I’m not sure who it is directed towards…it doesn’t seem to be one race or another, one economic category or another, one religion or another.

That is the good part.  Still undetermined and vague, it isn’t directed yet, and like a shotgun blast without any choke, it just sprays out, doing little damage despite the noise.

But, what if it does become more focused?

That would be a red flag, a sign of the times that would make me wary.  Remember the witch hunt era?  Who will be the “witches” of the 21st century?  It could be anything: age, race, creed, color, religion, political affiliation, occupation, or even where you live.  What then?  It’s only easy to ignore if you aren’t the target, but what if you were?

Hate crimes.  What if they become socially acceptable?

Think about it, think about what you hear and even what you say or think.  Are you part of the problem or are you going to be part of the solution?
